If you could write a letter to your pet, what would you write?
We used to be scared of one another, you know. I know you don’t remember it–barely do–but when you first came to our house in that kennel I didn’t see the loving little creature I see today. I saw a strange, snarling animal and confused your fear for malice. I was a little kid then, but even a little kid is a huge figure to a little dog like yourself.
You hadn’t had it easy. Your ribs stuck up out of your skin and you didn’t trust anyone. Slowly, slowly we learned about each other, and slowly, slowly, we became who we are now.
It breaks my heart to think about it, so often I choose not to think about it, but that doesn’t stop it from being there. Your snout is slowly turning grey, and your skin slowly starting to droop. You frolic and run less and less. You’re an old dog, Grace. But please, please don’t worry. You’ll still be our baby forever after you’re gone.
